Background

The General Faculty Committee: Freedom of Expression and Dissent results from a meeting of the Steering Committee of the General Faculty on May 10, 2024.

Following an effort begun by the Provost's Office – over a year ago – to inventory and review all of Dartmouth's policies related to Freedom of Expression and Dissent (FED), a series of revisions and clarifications have been proposed. Dartmouth seeks further review and feedback prior to implementing any updates.

Charge

The General Faculty Committee reviews the recommended updates to Dartmouth's policies related to Freedom of Expression and Dissent (FED). In doing so, the committee meets with various campus offices and stakeholder groups to understand current practices, further clarifies policies where needed, and ensures broad input.

Deliverables

  • A report to Provost David Kotz and Executive Vice President Jomysha Stephen, with a copy to the Steering Committee of the General Faculty, that reviews the Spring 2023 proposed policy changes and recommends any further updates or clarifications.
  • A recommended process for seeking community input on proposed policy changes, and a process for socializing them with the community.

Timeline

Begin work in July; deliver recommendations by November 1, 2024.
