About the Provost

David Kotz is the Provost, the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and the Director of Emerging Technologies and Data Analytics in the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health, all at Dartmouth College. He previously served as Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Sciences and as the Executive Director of the Institute for Security Technology Studies. His research interests include security and privacy in smart homes, pervasive computing for healthcare, and wireless networks. He has published over 240 refereed papers, obtained $89m in grant funding, and mentored nearly 100 research students. He is an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, a 2008 Fulbright Fellow to India, a 2019 Visiting Professor at ETH Zürich, and an elected member of Phi Beta Kappa. 

Kotz is a proud Dartmouth alumnus receiving his AB in Computer Science and Physics in 1986. Kotz received his PhD in Computer Science from Duke University in 1991.

Provost Responsibilities

The Provost is Dartmouth's chief academic officer and chief budget officer, directly responsible for overseeing the overall academic integrity of the entire institution and for those operations transcending the work of a single faculty. Dartmouth's professional schools, major academic support units, and several other offices, academic centers and institutes report to the Provost.

Working with the academic deans, the Provost also is responsible for supporting and advancing the programs, the teaching, and the scholarship of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Geisel School of Medicine, the School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, Thayer School of Engineering and the Tuck School of Business. The appropriate Deans have full operating responsibility in each case.

The Provost serves as the chair of the Budget Committee, and has major responsibility for setting budget priorities and developing a strategic financial plan.

The Provost also coordinates support of the research infrastructure and is responsible for coordinating government relations activities.
