A&S Future — Update and Opportunities

Dear colleagues,

We were sorry not to have enough time at Monday's meeting of the General Faculty to bring you up to date on Phase Two of the Arts & Sciences Future project—our collective inquiry into the best organization and budget structures to support the teaching, scholarship, and student experience that come under the umbrella of the arts and sciences at Dartmouth.

To that end, we invite you to join us next week at one of two town hall meetings for the Dartmouth community at which we will outline the context and progress of the work, as well as answer any questions you might have. The meetings are an in-person town hall on Monday, Oct. 23, at 5:15 p.m., at the Hanover Inn and a virtual town hall (Zoom meeting) the next day, Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 3:15 p.m.

In addition to these open sessions, we have shared (or soon will be sharing) this presentation with a number of smaller groups this month and next, including with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Thayer Faculty, the Dean of the College divisional staff, student government leaders, and more.

As we explained when we wrote to you in the summer, we have set up task groups and we have met (or will soon meet) with committees involved in arts and sciences faculty governance including the Council on Priorities, Committee on Policy, Committee on Chairs, as well as the Dartmouth-wide Council on Institutional Priorities, and leadership groups in the Division of Student Affairs. While the project will not generate specific proposals until this winter, we want to ensure that each of you have the opportunity to understand the goals of the project, the issues under discussion, and provide feedback at different points along the way.

In her inaugural address, President Beilock reinforced our belief in a Dartmouth that is distinguished by an education across disciplines, in the best traditions of the liberal arts. She also reminded us of the importance of collaboration and unity among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire community. We believe this project offers opportunities to build on that unity.

As always, you can find more information on the project on the Arts and Sciences Future website, and we welcome your written comments and questions via email at artsci-future@dartmouth.edu.

We look forward to sharing this work with you and hearing your ideas.

Sincerely,

Dave and Nina
